The Institute of Petrology and Structural Geology, Charles University, Prague, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the Laboratory of Experimental Petrology as part of a team focused on the experimental investigation of magma crystallization processes.

The aim of this project is to experimentally investigate the rates of kinetically driven processes (crystal nucleation, growth of rock-forming phases, texture formation, diffusion of trace elements) in crystallizing shallow magmas of mafic and felsic composition. The lab work will employ one-atmosphere furnaces, cold-seal pressure vessels, and piston-cylinder apparatus to snapshot the crystallization process and to derive the crystallization rate-data. Specific topic and work plan will be chosen and formulated based on the area of interest of the successful applicant. The salary is highly competitive in the Czech Republic.

This position is available for two years with possible extension to four years, and opens from April 2024. The position is open until filled, however the first review of applications will happen on February 29, 2024.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a motivated and independent candidate with experience in performing high-temperature/high-pressure petrological experiments (CSPV, piston-cylinder) and interested in experimental investigation of crystallization kinetic. The candidate should have finished PhD degree and should be able to independently run the lab work and analyse the obtained experimental products via basic imaging and analytical techniques (SEM, EMPA, optical microscopy).
