Project summary

This doctoral dissertation project is framed within broader studies of the development and nature of segregation processes and places of social exclusion in Czechia. This call specifically seeks researchers pursuing international comparisons, specifically with the state and development of social exclusion and segregation in other European country (countries) and with the research focus on the level of urban localities. There are two pathways for research work. First focuses on the most vulnerable population and its spatial concentrations in places of social exclusion. The project identifies the most pronounced spatial concentrations of poverty and social exclusion in the whole country, evaluates intra-urban and intra-regional differences and assesses trends in spatial concentration of socially vulnerable population. The project can focus on the macro-scale primarily quantitative international comparison working with spatially detailed data or on urban scale comparative study involving beside quantitative analyses also qualitative case study and interviews. Second pathway focuses on foreigners living, working and studying in Czechia and specifically on immigrants from so-called third countries (non-EU members). The project identifies the most pronounced spatial concentrations of immigrants in the whole country. Working on urban and neighborhood scale it focuses on local social interaction, processes of inclusion, exclusion and segregation of immigrants (and can specifically focus on immigrants of particular citizenships – language skills is comparative advantage).
