Micropollutants are organic compounds of anthropogenic origin, that can be detected at low concentrations in the environment, nevertheless, even at these low concentrations they can represent serious problems for living biota including human beings. As well as, microplastics (MPs), defined as plastic particles not exceeding a 5 mm size limit, are emerging, globally distributed micropollutants. Their presence was verified in various aquatic environments worldwide, including oceans and seas, lakes, rivers or dams, even in very remote areas. Research attention was paid mostly to marine systems; however, MPs were also detected in water bodies serving as sources of drinking water for people and in raw and treated water samples obtained directly at drinking water treatment plants, supplied by both surface- and groundwater. Despite these subjects are intensively studied, information about their real presence in the environment, real toxicological impacts and interactions of both groups are not satisfactory. Therefore, the aim of the project is development of robust analytical methods for studying these aspects, application of the methods for detection of micropollutants in the environment with special attention to aquatic compartments and interaction of both groups with respect to the fate and toxicological consequences related to the interactions
