Ferrocene phosphines are privileged ligands, finding extensive use in coordination chemistry and catalysis. This project aims at the development of new ferrocene diphosphines structurally related to the widely studied and practically utilized 1,1ʹ-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) equipped with two electronically and sterically different phosphine donor moieties. In particular the project will focus on the synthesis of these new compounds, their detailed structural characterization by a combination of conventional (e.g., spectroscopic) and advanced (e.g., computational and electrochemical ) methods, investigations into the coordination behavior of these new molecules in complexes of catalytically relevant late transition metals and, finally, catalytic applications of the developed ligands and complexes in practically relevant transition metal-mediated organic reactions. The research will build upon the expertise of the research groups (see, e.g., New J. Chem. 2022, 46, 21536; ChemCatChem 2021, 13, 4848; Organometallics 2021, 40, 427 and J. Organomet. Chem. 2018, 860, 14) and will develop it further toward new directions. The applicant must have a strong synthetic background and experience with handling of air-sensitive organometallic compounds and hands-on experience with the common characterization techniques (NMR, IR, ESI MS) and ability to work in a research team. Sound knowledge of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry is also required as the project is linked to the Inorganic Chemistry PhD study program.
